Touring the Bookstores of the World

For the Love of Books is my very own weekly Sunday meme dedicated to the wacky, weird, and wild world-wide-web finds related to the world of books. Topics can be anything ranging from unique bookcases, sculptures of books, and odd bookstores, to interesting uses for books, book quotes, bits of book news, etc. I love web-surfing and I have come across so many ideas that the possibities for this meme are nearly endless! If you would like to join in the fun, snag the image on the left and post the link your specific blog post in comments so that others can read about your internet find!

While surfing the 'net, I came across a city that has a tour for booklovers that tours all of the cities bookstores, and I thought that taking a look at the world's coolest bookstores would be my kind of world tour! So here are some of those amazing bookstores that go above and beyond the call of retail to tempt and tantalize bookworms everywhere.

Selexyz Dominicanen Bookstore
This gorgeous location in Maastricht, Holland is a 13th century Dominican Cathedral out of service for more than 200 years. In order to preserve the cathedral, the bookstore uses free-standing black steel scaffolding to support all of the bookshelves and catwalks.

El Ateneo Bookstore
This Buenos Aires bookstore was once a theatre in 1919, the Teatro Grand Splendid, that could house more than 1,000 people during an opera performance. It was converted into a cinema before becoming a bookstore in 2000.

Shakespeare & Co. Antiquarian Books
This Paris bookstore is probably one of the coolest small bookstores in the world. This bookstore is made famous by the movie "Before Sunset" and the book Time Was Soft There: A Paris Sojourn at Shakespeare & Co.. Books not only line the shelves, but are piled haphazardly on the floors in stacks of varying heights. A working piano is in one room that anyone can use, and poets regularly read there. If money were no object, my home would probably resemble this place! Oh yea, and it has a website, too.

El Pendulo
If you're curious to see a place where books meet Mother Nature, then this is the bookstore to visit. Plants of all shapes and sizes grace the walls and floors, making the huge bookstore as inviting as the shade of the forest, complete with air conditioning.

Le Bal des Ardents
I like this bookstore in Lyon, France for its unique entrance. The entrance is an arch made entirely of stacked books. With books for architecture, what else do you need? By the way, the name means "The Dance of the Burning Ones" - very mysterious name.

Calcutta, India
And because everyone should be given the chance to feel the wonder of reading, here is an image of a cramped bookstore in India. In this moment in time, that man has the best seat in the house.
